Comme d’habitude. Une pièce à engager (1997)
As Habitual’ is a set piece, a documentary fiction, about how to adapt oneself to unknown regions without surrendering to them. This movie is situated in Mombasa and Zanzibar, where you can find a material called kanga that hovers between language and architecture, and in fact turns into a habit. Kanga is a piece of cloth printed with a pattern and a saying, ready to wear or to be displayed, for carrying a baby, protection against the sun or against being seen. Doing this implies however that one allows others to read what you want to say. A habit now has become something that you can put on and take back off again. It has incorporated a critical fiction, involving the reader as well. Giving in to its material, the movie is not following a script. Instead it’s edited according to a pattern relying on habits and habituality, of bodies and houses. The pattern, that language that makes both walls and veils to billboards, turns into an architecture of layers that cover the international style and re-orient it. It turns veiling into a form of perception. While veils and walls are supposed to protect religion and possessions, the sayings involve these veils and walls in a public conversation in which everyone participates.

MIND FABRIC Talk by Joke Robaard

TALK by Joke Robaard in
A.VE.NU.DE.JET.TE - Institut de Carton vzw

SOCIAL = FABRIC

Why are these nouns in particular, “fabric” and “network”, so ubiquitous today? In countless fashion articles, political speeches and urban development meetings, these two cosmopolitan concepts are in perpetual flight through different domains, refusing to settle in any one. "Fabric" has also frequently  been qualified by the adverb "social". Addressing the urgency of this so-called social fabric, politicians, urban developers and sociologists expressed their concern for coherence, to those alliances apparently forsaken in the 20th century.

Although the vocabulary of textiles may tap into a collective memory of connected matter, ideally this knotted network offers ways of thinking that are more flatly pragmatic. How to convincingly and consistently grasp the material consequences of textile metaphors? In language we pretend to execute a material act; in reality we execute a technological instruction. Somewhere between fabricated language and real fabric there’s a tear, a hole; yet this “distressed” gap is actually desirable. The gap, in fact, is a perfect place for testing the consequences of literary and concrete matter. (J.Robaard, Serving Library Issue #6, 2014)
