guided tours by Piet de Jonge and Sabine van Sprang

Guide Piet de Jonge on Locus Solus and Little Sparta

Guide Piet de Jonge on Charly van Rest

The Locus Solus Domesticus exhibition has been open for 12 weeks now. We have had 17 guides who did a personal tour through the exhibition, like Martial Canterel in the novel Locus Solus. Last Saturday, December 15, Piet de Jonge and Sabine van Sprang were our excellent guides. During the tour, Piet de Jonge tried not to mention the names of the artists, which is quite difficult as the name of the artist is a label and the work of art can’t exist without its creator’s name. But Piet succeeded quite a while in allowing the art works exist in anonymity. The works change, the veil of the name is gone, a layer less to peel of. The erased black and white drawings on magazine images reminded Piet de Jonge of the surrealist magazine Minotaure. Photography can focus on objects that don’t seem to be real, but exist in another world that is surreal. The erasing on magazine images have the same atmosphere of strange, prehistoric stones or fossils like they were often reproduced in Minotaure. The three cobblestones are very precisely reproduced, just like Marcel D. had done when he made the facsimiles of his entire oeuvre in “boite en valise”. It is not really the work of an artist, but rather the work of a very precise handcrafts man. Comparable to the three painted marbles at the beginning of the exhibition.
Sabine van Sprang, specialist in 16th and 17th century Northern European painting, set out with a clear viewpoint. At first glance she perceived the exhibition as a “cabinet d’amateur” or “Wunderkammer”. In Renaissance Europe such a “cabinet of curiosities” was an encyclopaedic collection of types of objects whose categorical boundaries still had to be defined and could belong to natural history, geology, ethnography, archaeology, religious or historical relics, works of art and antiques. It is a representation of the world and the universe that fits into an exhibition space. Sabine started with the anamorphosis photo of Bernard Voïta, the painted marbles of Jan Swartenbroekx and the painted circles composition of Johan van Oord. Three works which represent the entire exhibition. Anamorphosis, perspective, illusion, perception are keywords, art and nature playing, meeting, wondering. In the Locus Solus Domesticus “Wunderkammer” the earth is flat, like the discs of Christoph Fink. The black disc, representing all the facts and events in the artist’s life that haven’t been written down, was the most perfect work in the exhibition, the best to end the guided tour with. But you can’t end with perfectionism, so Sabine asked the visitors to descend the stairs and go to the basement to see the most immaterial work in the exhibition: Joëlle Tuerlinckx’ simple geometric Volume lighted by three spots.

LOCSOLDOM opening impressions

Plan of the exhibition, alongside the plans of Loccus Solus, Chinati & Little Sparta

Yesterday, September 22, we guided a lot of interested people through the exhibition LOCUS SOLUS DOMESTICUS. We weren't sure if the principle of visiting through guided tours only would work. But now, the day after, it turned out to have been a particular experience; questions and discussions about the works, the who's, why's and when's, it all offered the visitors insight in the many art works in the exhibition. The photos below give an impression of the openingsday that attracted a lot of visitors.

Dirk Snauwaert in conversation with WO

Last Saturday May 26, Dirk Snauwaert tried to provoke Willem Oorebeek during the last conversation in the exhibition Les Secrets De La Mémoire by asking for the meaning of Willem's regular use of the word "iconoclasm". Wasn't it more "iconophobic" to black out the Paris-Match posters he asked the artist. The artist stayed cool and didn't stumble but stood on the fact that blacking-out is an act of iconoclasm. An iconophoby leads to iconoclasm, is part of it. To put the oeuvre of Willem in a historical perspective Dirk sketched the seventies when punk and anarchism were kicking and alive. Willem remarked that he never had the idea to belong to any direction or movement in art soever. As all artist feel their-selves, they fall in between every existing and actual art movement.
It was interesting when Dirk read some lines from Ad Reinhardt's text book Art as Art about the use and different meanings of black. Quote: "I (Ad Reinhardt) want to stress the idea of black as intellectuality and conventionality. There's an expression "the dark of absolute freedom" and an idea of formality. There's something about darkness or blackness that I don't want to pin down. But it's aesthetic." Willem thought it was beautiful and advised everybody to read Ad Reinhardt's Art as Art, but it hasn't anything to do with his art practise of blacking out. Dirk tried to get more information from the artist about his use of black to destroy images. The use from printed matter as raw materials to work with, to black-out or to print in layers over each other, is the big difference, Willem replied.
The whether was nice, beer and white wine was cooled, the audience was present in large numbers, the conversations were relaxed...
Thanks a lot Dirk Snauwaert, for trying to get Willem Oorebeek more specific about his black-out art practise.
Herewith some photos to give an impression of the conversation.

Ulrike Lindmayr in conversation with WO

Yesterday, Sunday April 22, Ulrike Lindmayr had a nice conversation with Willem Oorebeek in the exhibition Les Secrets De La Mémoire. It wasn't that crowded as the conversation with Koenraad Dedobbeleer but nevertheless the conversation was going into the depth. Ulrike and Willem talked about black-out as a phenomenon to attract more attention instead of wiping out or making invisible. And Ulrike evoked her acquaintance and slow appreciation of Willem's work which is dealing with printed matter, copies, editions, signature, the color black, dots and the grid.
In dialogue with the public the conversation developed into the subject of the image, how images work, what images mean or what they do, what an image is. An interesting and difficult problematic, and the conversation finished with the remark of someone from the audience: "there is no solution so there is no problem".
Thanks a lot Ulrike Lindmayr to unlock the work of Willem Oorebeek to us with your beautiful personal view.
Herewith two photos to give an impression of the conversation.

KD in conversation with WO

Yesterday, Sunday March 18, Koenraad Dedobbeleer had a quite long talk with Willem Oorebeek in the exhibition Les Secrets De La Mémoire. Many people showed up to listen and intervene in the conversation which was going about layers, the veil, the colour black, Catholicism, René Descartes, technical and material aspects of the work, the grid, little magnets, composition and/or decomposition, sabotage, Paris Match, punk, etcetera...
Some photos to give an impression.
A.VE.NU.DE.JET.TE INSTITUT DE CARTON would like to say "thank you" to Koenraad Dedobbeleer for his interesting investigation into the black-out world of Willem Oorebeek.

a busy opening

Les SECRETS de la MEMOIRE opened last Saturday, January 21 2012. We were with many to see the impact of the Paris Match blackout grid in the staircase of A.VE.NU.DE.JET.TE Institut de Carton. It is an eye opener to see Willem Oorebeek's lithography in such an unconventional way.

next exhibition

A grid enclosing the entire space is probably the most striking manifestation in the installation “Les SECRETS de la MEMOIRE” (The SECRETS of MEMORY). However, the manifestation is just an underlying aspect of the spatial gesture, rather a camouflage. The grid seems to be the processing of a continuous flow of actuality - ground into memories - collected over a decade.
Emotion, euphoria, tragedy, in short UPS and DOWNS, everything our subconscious experiences as the mood of the present has been classified in a dominating optical pattern of neutralised memories.
Closer to actuality this gesture of organised oblivion cannot be applied.
