short text by Paul van der Eerden

Cruel, nihilistic, dark, black, red, murderous, tragic: these are all qualifications that have been given to the tragedy Macbeth by William Shakespeare. Evil given shape in a series of scenes heading for an inevitable downfall. If Macbeth can be considered to be a study in ambition, fate and human failure, Paul van der Eerden’s 54-piece Macbeth series can be seen as a study into the possibilities of drawing itself. His series is an attempt to reach beyond the illustration of a literary narrative. An attempt to represent Evil as a “condition humaine” in images: cruel, nihilistic, dark, black, red, spooky.
